Research Programme
Ambassador George Savvaides was born in Athens in 1945. He holds two Bachelor degrees from the Law School of the University of Athens, in Law and Economic and Political Sciences. He also obtained an LLM degree from Harvard University Law School.
He joined the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in 1972 as a career diplomat. He regularly participated as member of the Greek delegation to the UN Conference on the Law of the Sea as well as Consul-General of Greece in Boston & Skopje (former Yugoslavia).
Moving through the ranks, he reached the highest echelons of the Ministry and served successively as Ambassador-Director of Bilateral Relations of Greece with Turkey & Cyprus, Ambassador-Permanent Representative of Greece to NATO, Secretary-General of the MFA and Ambassador of Greece to the USA.
He was then appointed as Special Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece and at the same time, Coordinator of Politico-Military and Operational Affairs of the MFA. He also served as Head of the Greek Delegation in Negotations for the delimitation of the country's martime zones with its neighbors, and as the country's Agent to the International Court of Justice at The Hague for the FYROM's claim against Greece.
